Andrey Kurkov’s international classic set in mid-90s Ukraine. In Hattie Naylor’s darkly comic adaptation all that stands between one man and murder by the mafia is a penguin. The Cold War offers a rich vein of imagery but decided to go with a classic spy with the penguin disguised within his trench coat. Kept the colours murky, with a nod to the Ukrainian flag.
